We are pleased to share the success of our recent "Awareness Creation and Sensitisation on Menstrual Hygiene Management" activities conducted at LGEA Primary School and Veronica Children Academy in Tsar Mbaduku, Vandeikya LGA, as well as St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nyiman, Makurdi, Benue State.

The initiative aimed to educate young girls and the community at large about the importance of menstrual hygiene management. This crucial topic not only impacts the health and well-being of women and girls but also plays a significant role in their ability to participate fully in educational and social activities.

Key Supporters and Contributors

- Mrs. Ashiver Wende: Her guidance and resources were instrumental in organizing and executing the sessions.

- Mrs. Ashihenen Chia Gbatse: Played a crucial role in coordinating with the schools and the church to ensure the smooth running of the program.

- Mrs. Member Nyajoh: Assisted in educational material preparation and community engagement efforts.

Activities and Impact

During the sessions, we focused on the following key areas:

1. Understanding Menstrual Hygiene: Educating girls about the menstrual cycle, proper hygiene practices, and the use of sanitary products.

2. Breaking Taboos: Addressing myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation to promote a more open and supportive community dialogue.

3. Health and Nutrition: Emphasizing the importance of good nutrition and hydration during menstruation.

4. Emotional Well-being: Discussing the emotional aspects of menstruation and offering support to young girls to manage their feelings and experiences effectively.

Participant Feedback

The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many young girls expressed their newfound confidence in managing their menstrual hygiene. Teachers and community members appreciated the educational approach and the effort to destigmatize menstruation.

 

Outcome/Achievements

  • A total number of 710 (f- 620  m-90) people were reached and enlightened on menstrual hygiene management
  • Total number170 IEC materials were distributed
  • Total number of 8 female staff were reached
  • Total number of 240 sanitary pads were distributed the girls and female  teachers
  • A total number of 24 reusable pads were also distributed.
  • 330 beads were also distributed. Hand beads were given to the girls to enable them understand menstrual cycle.
  • There was practical demonstration on how to use sanitary pad
  • Parents were advise to be know their children period and always endovour to provide them with correct menstrual material to use during menses.
  •  Parents were also encouraged to educate their girl child to enhance their knowledge on  changes that occur in their bodies as they grow up. This will help reduce getting wrong information from friends.

We are committed to continuing our efforts in menstrual hygiene management education and expanding our reach to more schools and communities. Together, we can ensure that every girl has the knowledge and resources she needs to manage her menstrual health with dignity and confidence.
