From February 21st to 23rd, 2024, WOHEPI, with the support of OKIDO Consult, conducted a skills acquisition training program in Tse-Apir Village, Makurdi LGA. This comprehensive training aimed to empower local residents by providing them with practical skills and knowledge to enhance their economic opportunities and improve their livelihoods. A total of 15 beneficiaries participated in the training program, which was divided into several specialized areas: 1. **Soap Making and Vaseline Production:** Four participants received hands-on training in the art of making soap and Vaseline. They learned about the ingredients, processes, and techniques necessary to produce high-quality, marketable products. The training included both theoretical lessons and practical demonstrations to ensure the participants could confidently replicate the processes independently. 2. **Baking and Confectionery:** Six participants were trained in the preparation of various baked goods and snacks, including doughnuts, buns, chin chin, puff puff, and the peppering of meat and eggs. The training covered recipe formulation, proper cooking techniques, and hygiene practices. This segment aimed to equip the trainees with the skills to start small-scale baking businesses that could cater to local demand. 3. **Business Management:** Three participants were taken through an intensive course on business management. This training covered essential topics such as financial planning, marketing strategies, customer service, and inventory management. The goal was to provide these individuals with the knowledge needed to run successful and sustainable businesses. 4. **Voluntary Loan Savings Association (VLSA):** Additionally, the women were educated on how to set up and operate a Voluntary Loan Savings Association. This training focused on financial inclusion, teaching the participants how to save, lend, and manage funds collectively. The VLSA model is designed to provide a sustainable financial support system, enabling members to access funds for business ventures and personal needs. **Outcomes of the Training:** - **Skill Acquisition:** All 15 beneficiaries successfully acquired new skills in soap making, Vaseline production, baking, and business management. These skills are expected to enhance their ability to generate income and improve their standard of living. - **Starter Packs:** Each participant was provided with a starter pack containing the necessary materials and tools to commence their business endeavors. This support ensured that the beneficiaries could immediately apply what they learned and start their businesses without the barrier of initial capital costs. - **Financial Inclusion:** A significant outcome of the training was the establishment of a Voluntary Loan Savings Association for the group. This association will serve as a revolving fund, providing financial support and fostering a culture of saving and responsible lending among the members. The training program in Tse-Apir Village represents a successful collaboration between WOHEPI and OKIDO Consult, aimed at empowering individuals through skill development and financial inclusion. By providing practical skills and supporting the creation of a community-based financial system, the initiative has laid a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods in the region.
