World Kidney Day (WKD) was celebrated on March 14, 2024, by WOHEPI in collaboration with the BENGONET Health Thematic Group and the Nephrology Unit of BSUTH. The theme for the 2024 celebration was “Kidney Health for All - Advancing Equitable Access to Care and Optimal Medication Practices.” This year's campaign focused on raising awareness about the importance of kidney health and ensuring that everyone has access to proper care and effective medication. To commemorate the day, a series of activities were organized to educate and engage the community: 1. Radio Program on Harvest FM (March 13, 2024): A phone-in program was broadcasted on Harvest FM Radio to raise public awareness about kidney health. Experts in nephrology discussed various topics, including the importance of maintaining healthy kidneys, common kidney diseases, and preventive measures. Listeners were encouraged to call in with their questions, making it an interactive and informative session. 2. Awareness and Sensitization Session at Government Model School, Makurdi (March 14, 2024): An educational event was held at Government Model School in Makurdi, targeting students and teachers. The session was attended by 400 participants, including students and faculty members. The focus was on educating them about the functions of the kidneys, how to keep them healthy, and ways to prevent kidney diseases. Interactive presentations and discussions helped demystify kidney health, making the information accessible and engaging for young minds. During the school session, healthcare professionals provided detailed explanations on how kidneys function as vital organs that filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. They highlighted the significance of hydration, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances like excessive salt and non-prescribed medications. The session also addressed common risk factors for kidney disease, such as diabetes and hypertension, and the importance of regular health check-ups. Additionally, the event included practical demonstrations and educational materials, such as brochures and posters, to reinforce the key messages. The students were encouraged to share the knowledge gained with their families and communities, thus amplifying the reach of the campaign. Overall, the World Kidney Day 2024 activities successfully raised awareness about kidney health, promoted preventive practices, and highlighted the need for equitable access to healthcare services and medications for all. The collaborative effort of WOHEPI, BENGONET Health Thematic Group, and the Nephrology Unit of BSUTH made a significant impact in advancing the campaign's objectives.
