1. Introduction

On the 29th of May 2025, the Women’s Health, Empowerment and Peace Initiative (WOHEPI) commemorated the 2025 World Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) Day at Community Secondary School Wadata, Makurdi. The event aimed to educate and empower young students with accurate information and practical knowledge about menstruation, debunk myths, and foster a supportive environment for all genders.

2. Opening Session

The program began with a welcome address by the school’s principal, Mrs. Victoria Akange, who encouraged students to embrace body changes with confidence and self-respect. This was followed by opening remarks from WOHEPI’s Executive Director, Mrs. Shimenenge Kyaagba, who underscored the importance of menstrual health awareness in achieving gender equality and maintaining school attendance for girls.

3. Educational Presentation

A comprehensive session titled 'As We Grow' was delivered, targeting the developmental and hygiene aspects of adolescence, focusing on the following themes:

a. Understanding Puberty:
Defined as the stage of life during which a child's body matures into an adult body capable of reproduction. Physical changes such as breast development, body hair growth, and the onset of menstruation were explained.

b. Menstrual Cycle Explained:
The four phases—Menstrual, Follicular, Ovulation, and Luteal—were described with their roles.

c. Signs and Symptoms During Periods:
Common symptoms such as cramps, mood swings, fatigue, and bloating were discussed.

d. Menstrual Products and Disposal:
Different products and safe disposal practices were taught.

e. Hygiene Tips During Periods:
Advice included regular changing of products, daily bathing, and wearing clean underwear.

f. Managing Minor Discomforts:
Tips included using heat for cramps, staying hydrated, eating well, and light exercise.

g. Inclusion and Support:
Emphasized roles of teachers and boys in supporting girls and reducing stigma.

4. Distribution and Donations

WOHEPI made impactful contributions including:
- Distribution of sanitary pads to girls and boys
- Provision of IEC materials
- Donation of an emergency sanitary pad stock for the school

4.1 Outcomes

  1. The event had a total of 164 participants comprising 100 girls, 41 boys, and 23 teachers.
  2. Improved awareness on menstrual health,
  3.  Increased willingness of students to engage in open discussions about menstruation,
  4. Better understanding of hygiene practices, and
  5. Enhanced readiness of the school to support menstrual needs through the emergency pad stock.

6. Conclusion

The 2025 World Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Day celebration at Community Secondary School Wadata was a success. WOHEPI remains committed to supporting young people through education, advocacy, and access to menstrual health resources.
