Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow: WOHEPI Celebrates the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child

In celebration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, themed “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” the Women’s Health, Empowerment, and Peace Initiative (WOHEPI) has taken significant steps toward uplifting and empowering vulnerable girls in Benue State, Nigeria.

WOHEPI, a non-governmental, nonprofit organization, is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by supporting orphans, vulnerable children, and women through education and healthcare. Despite the 2004 educational reform in Nigeria, schools across Benue State still face overwhelming challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, high dropout rates among girls, limited access to educational resources, and widespread poverty.

Girls are disproportionately affected by these issues, which are exacerbated by global crises such as poverty, climate change, conflict, and gender inequality. These barriers restrict their rights, limit their opportunities, and hinder the realization of their full potential. WOHEPI believes that girls must not face these challenges alone — they need support, resources, and recognition of their rights to fully realize their dreams.

Supporting Girls through Skill Acquisition

As part of its efforts to promote girls’ empowerment, WOHEPI conducted a gap analysis at the Government Science and Technical School in Tsar, Mbaduku, Vandeikya Local Government Area. The school, with 88 students enrolled in the garment making skills acquisition program (75 of whom are girls), was found to have only one sewing machine available for practical training.

In response, WOHEPI procured and donated 10 sewing machines along with necessary accessories to the school. This critical support enables the students to gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical experience in garment making — a vital step toward realizing their aspirations of becoming professional fashion designers.

Event Highlights

During the equipment handover ceremony, the school community gathered to witness a significant moment in their educational journey. Key highlights of the event included:

• Presentation of Equipment: 10 sewing machines and accessories were officially handed over to support the school's skill acquisition program.
• Awareness Session on Human Trafficking: A thought-provoking paper presentation was delivered, raising awareness among students about the dangers of human trafficking and the importance of self-empowerment and vigilance.

The general congress expressed deep appreciation for the donation and the celebration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in girls’ education and skills development as a path toward gender equality and economic independence.

Challenges Noted

Despite the success of the event, a few logistical challenges were observed:

• Lack of Hall Space: The school did not have a proper hall to accommodate all students, resulting in many standing throughout the session.
• No Electricity: There is currently no power supply on the school premises, which may hinder the effective use of the donated sewing machines.

Looking Ahead

Inspired by the success of this initiative, WOHEPI is already preparing to celebrate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, building on its commitment to empower young girls, provide essential resources, and advocate for their rights.

By investing in girls today, we pave the way for a more equitable, prosperous, and inclusive tomorrow.
