October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, and in 2024, the Women’s Health Empowerment and Peace Initiative (WOHEPI), in collaboration with the Medical Women Association Nigeria (MWAN) and other partners, spearheaded a series of impactful activities in Benue State. These activities, conducted between October 1st and 25th, aimed to educate and empower individuals, especially young women, about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.
The events were held at the Good News Chapel, Benue State University Makurdi, and St. Ann Secondary School Otukpo, attracting a significant number of participants, including 1,000 female students and 32 male attendees.
Educating for Early Detection
The primary focus of the sessions was to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for early detection of breast cancer. Facilitators discussed the importance of self-breast examinations and provided practical demonstrations to ensure the students could confidently apply these skills.
Dr. Enye Agaba delivered an insightful presentation on the nature of breast cancer, describing it as a condition where abnormal breast cells grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that, if untreated, can spread to other parts of the body. She highlighted that early detection is the cornerstone of successful treatment, stressing the importance of being vigilant about changes in the breast.
Preventive Measures and Advocacy
Participants were also educated about preventive strategies, which include regular aerobic exercise, reducing dietary fats, increasing fiber-rich foods, abstaining from alcohol and smoking, and maintaining overall healthy lifestyles. Dr. Agaba emphasized that although lifestyle changes cannot eliminate all risks, they play a critical role in reducing the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
The sessions underscored the importance of continued conversations around breast cancer, addressing stigma, and advocating for improved access to healthcare services. The theme for 2024, “No-one Should Face Breast Cancer Alone,” resonated deeply, highlighting the need for community support and comprehensive care for individuals living with breast cancer.
Impact and Outcomes
The campaign reached an impressive milestone, training 1,000 young women on self-breast examination and distributing educational materials to enhance awareness. Participants were encouraged to share their newfound knowledge with peers, creating a ripple effect of awareness across their communities.
The initiative not only empowered participants with vital health information but also fostered a culture of breast cancer advocacy. By addressing myths, promoting early detection, and encouraging treatment adherence, the campaign contributed significantly to the fight against breast cancer in Benue State.
Looking Ahead
While the event was successful, challenges such as late arrival of participants highlighted areas for improvement. Organizers recommend expanding the campaign's scope to reach even more people across the state. Plans are already underway for next year’s campaign, with a renewed commitment to promoting breast health and saving lives.
As we look forward to Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2025, the achievements of Pink October 2024 serve as a testament to the power of education, advocacy, and community collaboration in the fight against breast cancer. Together, we can ensure that no one faces this journey alone.
